The 5 F’s of returning a serve.

One of the most important & difficult strokes in tennis is the return (of serve). That’s why when we train, we focus on the 5 F’s (Forward, Focus, First Step, Four, Follow) to make sure we are getting the most out of our return.

  1. Forward – Always start the return with a split step (quick jump) and moving your body forward
  2. Focus – Focus on the opponents toss, body language and follow through to read where the ball will come
  3. First Step – On the return you always want to step with your outside foot first toward the ball
  4. Four – four means to hold your return swing as if you were hitting four consecutive balls lined in a row to get you to hit through the return
  5. Follow – short for follow through to finish your swing

The return of serve is the most important aspect of the game as it will take away your opponent’s most crucial stroke. Another good reminder is to be confident and avoid the ace, you will then put yourself into a position to rally and get yourself in a scoring position. Returning serve successfully and commandingly will improve outcomes and lead to better results.
